Grooming FAQ's

We are so excited to have you come to The Dog Pawlour for your pet’s upcoming service.  We know there are times when you might think of questions about the grooming process after you already scheduled.  We hope this helps you with any additional questions you have as well as let you know about policies on special cases for our clients.

  • Grooming appointments range between 3-4 hours. We stagger our appointments throughout the day to allow dogs to have breaks and/or tend to their specific needs (Ex. if they don’t care for the blow dryer or need some extra time during the groom). We aim to have the grooming process be a positive experience, and help the dogs enjoy the love and attention they get at the Pawlour. 
  • In some cases, the groom may take longer due to a dog’s coat condition and/or behavior, and if that’s the case the groomer will let you know at the start or during the grooming process.
  • We do offer a RUSH GROOM service, where we groom your dog straight through, averaging 1-1.5 hours based on the size of the dog.  There is an extra cost for this service, $20-$30, and the service needs to be scheduled first thing in the morning.  If you are interested in changing your appointment to this type of service, please give us a call and we can help you reschedule.

 


  • Timing doesn’t always work out for our busy daily lives! Dropping off early is never a problem.  However, due to the groomers’ schedules, your dog’s grooming may not be started until the time of the appointment.
  • While we appreciate promptness to appointment times, we do understand that unexpected things happen during your day. If you are going to be late for your appointment, please call the shop to let the groomer know as soon as possible. A $10 LATE FEE will be applied if you are more than 15 minutes late to your appointment. If you are at least 30 minutes late to your appointment, it is within the groomers’ discretion to still complete the appointment with the LATE FEE or to require you to reschedule your appointment to a later date. If you are required to reschedule due to being 30 or more minutes late, the NO SHOW/SAME DAY CANCELLATION fee will be applied.
  • If your pet needs treats for grooming, please bring them! Especially if they are in their first year and are just getting accustomed to the grooming process.  Treats and food rewards are a great way to create and reinforce a positive association with grooming.  We do not provide treats due to food allergies and restrictions but do sell various types of treats in our retail area which can be purchased for the groom.
  • When your dog is finished with their groom, we will call the number verified at drop-off to let you know your pup is ready for pickup. The groomer may be able to give you an approximate finish time at drop off, but unfortunately due to the nature of working with animals, this may not always be accurate to the minute. If you are trying to plan for your day, please just ask for the groomer to give you a heads up when the dog is almost finished with the groom at a time interval that works for you.
  • If you have a time conflict and need your dog ready at a specific time, please call the shop as soon as possible to let the groomer know so they can plan accordingly to accommodate. In some cases, we might have you come in at an earlier appointment time so we can ensure we complete your dog at the desired time.
  • Days are busy, and we understand that you might not be able to immediately pick your dog up after the groom is completed. Dogs are welcome to stay with us after their groom until we close at 6 pm (Monday-Friday) and 5 pm (Saturday). We will keep your pup comfortable in a kennel and provide them with water.
  • At The Dog Pawlour, we understand that some pets are very nervous and/or stressed during the grooming process and at times are recommended to be medicated by your vet. If this is the case, the groomer does need to be aware of what medication your pet is on during grooming, the dosage amount, and the approximate time that the medication was administered. Accepted medications are Trazadone, Gabapentin, Fluoxetine, Tramadol, and Rimadyl.  We unfortunately will not groom a dog on Acepromazine. 

  • We accept both spayed/neutered dogs as well as intact dogs. If a female dog has started their heat cycle, we do require them to be rescheduled to a later date. This is due to the inherent risks associated with the grooming process, specifically bathing a female dog in heat. During the heat cycle, there is a greater chance of bacteria and debris entering the reproductive organs and causing serious infections. It is our best practice to wait until the end of the heat cycle when the external organs are less swollen and bleeding has stopped, before bathing to minimize the risk of infection. 

  • Depending on the surgery, the timeframe will vary, so please ask your veterinarian about the approved timeframe to get your dog groomed following surgery. Following a neuter or spay, the recommended timeframe would be 2 weeks post-operation.
